Pioneers Sweep Conference Opener

Rout Paragould Rams 12-2, 13-0

published Wednesday, Mar 10, 2004

The Pioneers opened their conference schedule by crushing the Paragould Rams at Paragould on Tuesday night. The weather returned to normal for High School Baseball with some fans swathed in several inches of clothing and blankets. I lost the feeling in my toes by the third inning and my fingers shortly thereafter. If was good to have the weather return to normal. The Pioneers appeared undaunted by the cold and quickly gained the upper hand on the Rams. Easily outperforming the Rams in all measures, it was a great way to open Conference competition for the Pioneers.

In the opener Starting Pitcher Grant Gatlin provided the first score of the game with a two out solo home run. He then stepped onto the mound and delivered from there, striking out 14 while allowing only 2 runs on 7 hits. The batting was good with hits throughout the lineup: Kyle Francis (2 singles), Woody Skinner (single), Brad Fletcher (2 singles, double), Patrick Smith (single), Anthony Rhodes (single, double), Weldon Davis (single), Brady Yeager (single). Jeremy Burba and Brad Fletcher scored 3 runs each for the Pioneers and Fletcher also led the field with 3 RBI's. Kyle Francis stole an impressive (Kyle has a career high of 5 bases in 1 game) 4 bases while the rest of the Pioneers combined for an additional 10 SB's. The Final score was Paragould - 2, Batesville -12 in 7 innings.

In the second game the Rams faced Pioneer Senior Jeremy Burba, also in his first appearance of the season. Jeremy completely shut down the Rams offense by pitching a 5 inning no-hitter, striking out 12 while walking only 3. The Pioneer hitters lined up again and first crossed the plate in the second inning when Patrick Smith is brought in by the first of 3 Weldon Davis singles. The other Pioneer hitters were: Woody Skinner (2 singles), Grant Gatlin (double), Brad Fletcher (3 rbi home run), Anthony Rhodes (double, single), Evan Eary (single). Jeremy Burba also had 3 rbi's. Final Score Paragould - 0, Batesville 13.

The Pioneers take the field again on Thursday at Home against the Mountain Home Bombers.

A small group of Eskimos, pictured here, stopped by and helped cheered the Pioneers on to their victories.

Rule Review #9

Bottom of the Seventh, Winning run at 3rd, runners at 2nd & 3rd. In order to distract the catcher and give the runner at 3rd a chance to score the runner at 2nd breaks and runs to 1st base. The catcher throws at the runner but misses him and the runner at 3rd scores. Was there a rule infraction?

Thanks to David Jones of North Little Rock, who correctly cited the rule: (7.08i) Any runner is out when after he has acquired legal possession of a base, he runs the bases in reverse order for the purpose of confusing the defense or making a travesty of the game. The umpire shall immediately call 'Time' and declare the runner out.

Rules Review Disclaimer: These interpretations are my own. They may well be incorrect. I try to research them well before I use them, but the rules of baseball, which seem very simple, often are not. The point of the review is to stimulate thought and to clarify situations that I know have presented difficulties in the past. So my apoligies in advance for any mistakes that may creep in.
