Pioneers defeat Golden Hurricane

No Hurricane, Just a Squall

Carl's Scorecard - Jonesboro

published Sunday, Mar. 11, 2007

The Pioneers made their first appearance at home Friday night when they faced off against the 6A East's Jonesboro Golden Hurricane. Just a reminder, never call them the Hurricanes, sends them mad for some reason. In any case, the Hurricane turned out to be little more than a few clouds and some scattered rain. The Pioneers were determined to open at home well and may have still been a little angry over the way they were treated by an unnamed Searcy official. Regardless, the Pioneers played well and claimed their first home victory, and they didn't even need any home cooking to do.

Pioneer hurler, Steven Cesarski stepped on the mound, to attempt to claim his third win of the year. He gave up an immediate double and after picking up two outs, a home run, to give the Hurricane a two run lead. These would be the only scores of the game. In fact, no Hurricane advanced past second base for the balance of the game! The Pioneers take the lead in the bottom of the inning with runs scored by Cody Aycock, Aaron Thornton and Cesarski. Aycock was hit by a pitch, Thornton singled and Cesarski doubled. The Pioneers may have broken the Hurricane spirit with lead off back to back home runs by Thornton and Cesarski in the third to move the score to 5 - 2 Pioneers.

In the fifth, the Pioneers add a run when Nick Palese doubles and is scored when Kyle Kallsnick grounds out. The Pioneers' final two runs are scored by the lead off batters in the sixth, Cody Aycock and Jake Arnold. Aycock is hit by a pitch, for the second time in the game, advances to third on two wild pitches, and is scored by Arnold with a single. Arnold scores on the last Pioneer hit of the game, a double by Cesarski.

Cesarski picks up his third win of the season, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits. He picked up 11 strikeouts along the way while allowing no walks. A great performance for the Pioneer southpaw. The Pioneer batters claimed 10 hits, including 2 home runs and 4 for extra bases. Hitting for the Pioneers; Thornton - hr,1b; Cesarski - hr,2x2b; Weeks - 2b,1b; kallsnick - 1b; Palase - 2b; Arnold - 1b. The Pioneers play at home against the Greenbrier Panthers on Monday, and open Conference Play on Tuesday at home facing the Paragould Rams.

Hold the Rope!, Carl.
