Pioneers Best Panthers

published Tuesday, March 15, 2005

The Pioneers improved their record to 3 - 1 with a victory Monday night over the Greenbrier Panthers. The Panthers, members of the 4A West conference came into the game with a 3 - 5 season standing. Sophomore Cody Aycock took the mound tonight for his first varsity start and pitched an outstanding game allowing only 1 hit, only 2 Panthers even reached scoring position. The Pioneer batters had a better outing with 10 hits and defensively they played error free baseball (as expected). Overall, a great performance by this young Pioneer team.

In the first Inning Aycock sat them down in order with 2 strikeouts and a fly out. Lead off Batter Hunter Platt reached on a HP moved to third when Davidson doubled and scored the first run of the evening on a routine ground out. Davidson adds the second run of the night when Chris Milum also doubles. The score remains 2 - 0 Pioneers until the 5th inning when Addison Rayford bunts and the Greenbrier pitcher throws wide, Rayford doesn't check up until he slides in safe at third. He then completes the circuit scoring on a passed ball. Chris Milum steps into the box and drives his second double of the night. Milum is relieved on the bases by courtesy runner Kyle McMullin who eventually scores when Casey Aycock singles and picks up an rbi. The 6^th inning starts out rough for the Panthers with Cody Aycock reaching on an infield error. Platt singles advancing Aycock to third and advancing to second himself when the outfielder throws to third. Davidson loads the bases on a walk. Aycock scores on a Rayford fielders choice, leaving Platt out advancing to third. Milum walks loading the bases again. Jason Angel picks up 2 rbi's, scoring Davidson and Rayford with a base hit. Final Score: Pioneers 7 - Panthers 0. Cody Aycock picks up his first win as a Pioneer hitter, allowing only 1 hit, with 7 strikeouts, no walks but 4 HP's.

Leading the team at the plate were: Milum - 2 for 3, 2 doubles; Davidson - double, single; Platt and Angel - 2 hits each. The Pioneers are scheduled to take the field at home tomorrow for their season opener conference series with the Paragould Rams.

Scoring Rule Review

Question #1

Bottom of the Seventh winning run on 3rd base. The batter pulls one down the first base line. He advances to second and the runner at third easily strolls in to score the winning run. What hit is the batter credited with?

It didn't take JBodine72 (aka James Smith) long to answer this one correctly. The batter is credited with a rbi single. Regardless of which base he ends the play on, he can only be credited with the number of bases the runner who scores the winning run advances. So, with the winning run on third he can only be credited with a single. The exception to the rule? Of course, there is always an exception! An out of the park Home Run will be scored as such, and is the only situation where the Home team who goes into the bottom of the final inning tied or behind may win by more than 1 run.

Question #2

Since that one was answered so quickly let's try one that may be a little harder. With a runner at first the batter hits a ground ball to the shortstop. He fields the ball cleanly and makes a throw to the 2nd baseman in an attempt to get the lead runner. The throw is wide and both runners are safe. How do you score the batters AB and the runners advance to second?

James gets this one first also. The batter reaches base on a fielder's choice, and the runner advances on the error. This is one of those situations where you score what should have happened instead of what did.

Question #3

There are 4 conditions that must be met to score a sacrifice bunt. I'll give you the last one. The batter must be out. Now give me the first 3 conditions and the exception (I told you there is always one) to the condition I gave you.

Rules Review Disclaimer: These interpretations are my own. They may well be incorrect. I try to research them well before I use them, but the rules of baseball, which seem very simple, often are not. The point of the review is to stimulate thought and to clarify situations that I know have presented difficulties in the past. So my apoligies in advance for any mistakes that may creep in.
