Pioneers travel to Van Buren

defeated by Pointers 4-3

published Saturday, March 19, 2005

The Pioneers suffered a difficult defeat Friday evening at the "Field of Dreams" in Van Buren, Arkansas. They had made the long trek to face opponents that they had become familiar with last year at Spring Training in Cocoa, Florida. Their hopes of redeeming their losses in Florida were dispelled when they were again defeated by the Pointers. The most disappointing aspect of their defeat was the fact that none of the Pointer runs were earned. Had the Pioneers not committed key errors they would have won 3-0 rather than lost 4-3.

The Pioneers got on the board quickly, with lead off batter Hunter Platt reaching on a walk, stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball. Addison Rayford gathered the first rbi of the game with a single. Pioneer starting pitcher Evan Eary retires the Van Buren batters on 3 infield outs allowing 1 to walk. The Pioneers were unable to reach the bases in the second inning, however Van Buren would. A lead off hit followed by 2 outs looked like a good inning for the Pioneers but an infield error that should have ended the inning would result in the first Van Buren run of the game. Three consecutive hits and a walk will allow two more Van Buren runners to cross the plate. The Pioneers even the score in the fourth, with a lead off walk by Rayford, Rayford steals second and scores when Cody Aycock singles. Kelly Davis sac bunts Aycock to second. Hunter Platt drives in Aycock with a double. Van Buren scores what will prove to be the winning run in the fifth when an infield error allows a Van Buren runner to second. He scores when the next batter doubles. Leading off for the Pioneers in the sixth, Davis singles and is advanced by a well executed Casey Aycock bunt. Davis advances to third when Platt reaches on a fielders choice, leaving runners at the corners with one out. Nick Davidson hits a ground ball to the third baseman, Davis breaks for home, the third baseman throws to the catcher who easily tags Davis out. The Pioneers hold the Pionters off in the bottom of the sixth with a ground out and two great catchs by Kelly Davis in left field. A Pitching change by the Pointers quickly dispells any hope of a Pioneer rally with only Rayford reaching base on an error and 3 strikeouts.

Losing Pitcher Evan Eary went the distance for the Pioneers, allowing 4 runs, none earned, on 5 hits, 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. Batting leaders for the Pioneers were Platt - double, Rayford - 2 singles. The Pioneers are scheduled to Play Lake Hamilton Monday and return to conference play on Tueday with Marion. Both games are on the road.

Scoring Rule Review

Question #1

Bottom of the Seventh winning run on 3rd base. The batter pulls one down the first base line. He advances to second and the runner at third easily strolls in to score the winning run. What hit is the batter credited with?

It didn't take JBodine72 (aka James Smith) long to answer this one correctly. The batter is credited with a rbi single. Regardless of which base he ends the play on, he can only be credited with the number of bases the runner who scores the winning run advances. So, with the winning run on third he can only be credited with a single. The exception to the rule? Of course, there is always an exception! An out of the park Home Run will be scored as such, and is the only situation where the Home team who goes into the bottom of the final inning tied or behind may win by more than 1 run.

Question #2

Since that one was answered so quickly let's try one that may be a little harder. With a runner at first the batter hits a ground ball to the shortstop. He fields the ball cleanly and makes a throw to the 2nd baseman in an attempt to get the lead runner. The throw is wide and both runners are safe. How do you score the batters AB and the runners advance to second?

James gets this one first also. The batter reaches base on a fielder's choice, and the runner advances on the error. This is one of those situations where you score what should have happened instead of what did.

Question #3

There are 4 conditions that must be met to score a sacrifice bunt. I'll give you the last one. The batter must be out. Now give me the first 3 conditions and the exception (I told you there is always one) to the condition I gave you.

Rules Review Disclaimer: These interpretations are my own. They may well be incorrect. I try to research them well before I use them, but the rules of baseball, which seem very simple, often are not. The point of the review is to stimulate thought and to clarify situations that I know have presented difficulties in the past. So my apoligies in advance for any mistakes that may creep in.
