Pioneers split with Raiders

published Thursday, March 27, 2003

The Pioneers began their conference double header against Nettleton on Tuesday but the weather refused to cooperate and after only 3 complete innings of play and with the score 1-0 Pioneers the game was delayed till Wednesday. Action picked up where it had left off and continued to be a low scoring defensive game with more errors than either team would have liked until the end of the 7th when the score stood at 3-3. The top of the 8th would tell the tale for the Pioneers when a tiring Altom walked in 2 runs and the final run of the game scored on a Fry single. This was the first Pioneer loss of the year. The Pioneers came back with a vengence in the 2nd game, forcing starting pitcher to pitch 117 pitches before he was relieved in the 5th. Pioneer hurler Henrickson seemed to only gain strength, pitching the full 7 innings, striking out 4 straight in the 4th and 5th inning. Nettleton was never able to string together enough hits to threaten and went down 5-2 in 6 1/2 innings.

Rule Review #6

There is a runner at third, with 2 outs and 2 strikes on the batter. The runner takes a huge lead and attempts to steal home. The pitcher pitchs the ball and it strikes the runner in the strike zone. What is the umpire's call? Would it be different if there were less than 2 outs?

Thanks to Ricky Platt and Kenny Davis for their responses. With 2 outs the batter is declared out and the run does not score. With less than 2 outs the batter is out and the run does score.

Rules Review Disclaimer: These interpretations are my own. They may well be incorrect. I try to research them well before I use them, but the rules of baseball, which seem very simple, often are not. The point of the review is to stimulate thought and to clarify situations that I know have presented difficulties in the past. So my apoligies in advance for any mistakes that may creep in.
