Season End Nears

State Tournament only 2 Weeks Away!

published Monday, Apr. 16, 2007

Thursday before the Wynne games I went to the Visitors dugout to get the Yellowjackets lineup for the first game. As I stood and visited with Coach Meyers we talked about the success of the Yellowjackets this year. He told me that there were some in Wynne that believed the Pioneers would not do well this year due to a lack of experienced players on the field. They speculated that we might not be competitive at all. His response was "They're Batesville". Two simple words; but it was all that was required to explain that counting the Pioneers out is always a mistake. He then pointed at the banners on the fence and said "There is why you win; Tradition". He is right in his belief that tradition runs strong in the Pioneers.

We do have a tradition of winning, and of winning big. When I announce at the home games, I take great pleasure in announcing the fact that the Pioneers are 5 time state champions. It is a confirmation of what we all know. Pioneer baseball is known across the state as a program that produces teams that consistently contend for state championships. With eight trips to the finals, we have proven time and again that we are champions. Now it is time for the current Pioneers to focus on this simple fact; you have inheritied a great tradition, one envied by all across the state. If you are to add to this legacy, it is time to step up and prove your worth. You represent all those who have gone before, all who worked to earn the respect you now enjoy. What you do this year will be handed to those who take the field after you leave. What do you wish your legacy to them to be? This is my sixth year with the Pioneers. I have made four trips to Fayetteville to see the Pioneers play for a championship in the last five years. I expect no less this year.

Now is the time to dedicate yourself to continuing and enhancing the Pioneer tradition. Now is the time to realize that every play, every at bat, could be crucial to that goal. The season is closing, the state tournament is rapidly approaching and you must be prepared for the most important games of your careers. Now is the time to step up and reserve a place on the wall for the Pioneers of 2007.

Hold the Rope! Carl.
