Pioneers defeated by Sylvan Hills for 4A State Championship

Final Score 13 - 0

published Sunday, May 11, 2003

A Hero is a person who shows extraordinary courage under the most adverse circumstances. A person who stands with his comrades, who does not flee the battle, who gives his all for his teammates. He puts his team first, himself second. He respects his opponents, that they may respect him. He wins with humility and loses with dignity. He makes no excuses, nor is he boastful of his accomplishments. If a teammate stumbles and falls he helps him to his feet and reminds him that he too is a hero.

If has become my personal privledge to know a group of young men who fit this description. To have attended their games, and shared in their victories and defeats. And while again they have fallen 1 game short of their goal of a State Championship, I am not left with a feeling of defeat, but a feeling of great pride for what they did accomplish. Another 4A State Runner Up title, finishing 2nd out of 32 teams. A winning season, 27 more victories, extraordinary effort and perseverance as a team, with each individual giving his all. This year has been an opportunity for the Pioneers to prove that they are made of the stuff of hero's. I never doubted it for a moment.

I would like to offer my personal congratulations to the 2003 Batesville Pioneers on another great season, and my thanks to all of their families and supporters for being there for them, through the good times and bad. They couldn't have done it without you.

Rule Review #8

A runner at 3rd scores on a dropped fly ball deep in right field.
Does the batter get an rbi?

Thanks to John Bell for his response. He was correct in his interpretation of the rules for scoring this situation. If the outfielder had caught the ball and the runner would still have scored then the batter would recieve the rbi. Another oddity is that if a batter hits into a double play, scoring a runner from third, he does not get the rbi.

If you think you know the answer, drop me an email at I know the Answer! If you get the first correct answer I'll credit you for your superior baseball rules knowledge on the site.

Rules Review Disclaimer: These interpretations are my own. They may well be incorrect. I try to research them well before I use them, but the rules of baseball, which seem very simple, often are not. The point of the review is to stimulate thought and to clarify situations that I know have presented difficulties in the past. So my apoligies in advance for any mistakes that may creep in.
