    Welcome

    - Mar 11, 2007 12:20:13
Welcome to the 2007 Pioneer Blog! We're having some problems with people who seem intent on misusing this space for things other than discussion of Pioneer Baseball. If you happen to see an offensive remark, rest assured we will get it off of here as soon as possible. I have taken steps to try and minimize attempts to do this, but they re relentless. Please enjoy this and share your comments freely. The Pioneers are off to a great start so let's talk about it.

Thank you Mr. Fletcher for all the many great years you put into the Pioneer baseball web, as well as the great music and P.A. work, and of course, Carl's scorecard.

After talking w/you this afternoon it makes us appreciate all you have done for the Pioneer Baseball program. I find it will be an impossible task for anyone to do all the wonderful contributions you made to make Batesville's program one of the best in the state.

Thanks again and best wishes to you and your family. Please drop in and catch a game when possible.
    • Nov 21, 2007 14:05:38 2008 on the horizon - HOZIER24
Congrats to the football team on a successful season. The good part about hoops is that baseball & warm weather are sure to follow, best wishes to the Pioneer basketball team on a fine start.

With the '08 baseball season on the horizon, the Pioneers will again be faced, basically, having to replace the entire squad.... ONLY 4 players return with any significant playing time from a team that lost out to the eventual state champs in the semi-finals.

Unless, we have anybody move into the area, it appears we will have 1 Senior.....Something the Pioneers aren't generally used to. The 2 juniors & 1 soph that played last year will be called on to be leaders......It will also open up several opportunities for additional juniors & sophs to step in & contribute immediately.

It will be quite a challenge for the coaches, players & fans to continue the PIONEER BASEBALLTRADITION.

Enjoy the Holiday season & come back ready to work.

      Hope the rope...

Or maybe some of the players from last year that you just TOTALLY discredited with that last post will get the opportunity to surprise you!
        • Feb 17, 2008 20:59:50 Re: 2008 on the horizon - Hozier24
          %d,

Who are some of the players from last year who were TOTALLY discredited?

If you read the November 21st post carefully, the returning players include 1 Senior, 2 Juniors and 1 Soph that had ANY considerable playing time. As in the past, the Pioneers have always been able to reload for success. I simply stated that there will be opportunities for SEVERAL players to step up and CONTRIBUTE IMMEDIATELY. I'm sorry you took my post the wrong way. In order for the Pioneers to be successful, THE TEAM will need contributions from everyone, including players who didn't play last season.

          Hold the rope.....

Congratulations to Arnie, Cizz, Heady, Pooch, and Weeksey for making all-district. You guys did a tremendous job all year and we are proud of you.

Congratulations to Captain Thornton & Commander Cody on your all state honors!! Great season.

Best wishes in your college endeavors, your next chapter is waiting ahead. Be proud, not everybody gets the opportunity you both worked hard for.......

You've continued in the storied & honored Pioneer Tradition..

      Hold on to the rope.
    • May 10, 2007 12:17:43 Re: volunteers - twigs
Carroll, Thank you so much for all you do keeping up with stats, music, emceeing, tournament director, etc. If we didn't have you taking charge on so many things, I don't know what we'd do. I APPRECIATE YOU!!!! I would also like to thank Jeanne Roepcke for being my right arm in the concession stand this year plus Julie Dozier and Karen Painter for taking the reins on the girls field. Natalie and Jacqui were key in helping me out of some tight jams! Thanks Girls!! I would also like to thank hozier24 for all the positive comments about the entire team he made all year after every game, plus the beautiful "Pioneer" painted behind home plate takes him about eight hours just to repaint each year.
    • May 10, 2007 10:44:17 Unsung - tobwoe
I must agree with Carl. Those people who are behind the scenes working are as much a part of the team as those 9 players on the field. Everyone, the players on the bench waiting for their turn on the field, the volunteers who sweat and toil in the concession stand night after night, the die hard fans who rush out after work to make the last few innings of the game, the coaches wives and children who sacrifice their time with their husband and father, the community members who follow the team and set up websites and organize tournaments to promote the Pioneers. This is truly what being a PIoneer is all about. It takes all of you to help hold that rope. YOU are the essence of a PIONEER and the team would not be what they are if you were not what you are.
    • May 09, 2007 16:25:23 2007 - Martin 77
A great year for the team. All played well, and I believe had fun. Thanks to the coaches and Carl who is the best.
    • May 09, 2007 15:24:33 MANY THANKS TO CARL - HOZIER24
      Fletch,
Many thanks for all you do for the Pioneer baseball program. The A.D., the entire baseball coaching staff, all the parents & the school district administrators should all be thankful to have someone that does SO much to promote & coverage for this school's baseball program.

You are a credit to them all!!

Thanks again & already looking forward to next year's coverage.
    • May 09, 2007 14:24:24 The Pioneer Tradition Continues! - Carl
The Pioneer Tradition isn't that we win the State Championship every year; it's that we will Compete for it every year.
In that regard the team of '07 has upheld it's end of the bargain and extended that tradition another year. Congratulations
to the Pioneers on a great year. Be proud of yourselves, because your fans are very proud of you! I'd like to thank all the
parents who work very hard to make the Pioneers as successful as they are; unsung heros are still heros.
    • May 08, 2007 10:33:29 SEASON ENDS - HOZIER24
Congratulations to the Pioneers on a wonderful season.....25-7, finishing up in the state semi-finals is nothing to hang your heads about.

      Hold on to the rope.
    • May 06, 2007 00:07:35 PIONEER/AIREDALE IRONY - HOZIER24
Backed by the 3 hit shutout by Cody(2nd win in as many days), the Pioneers avenged the '02 Championship loss to Alma by turning the table with the same score of 7-0, in 2nd round action. Phone conversation this w/Carl, as well as researching this in the Pioneer site, confirmed the stat. Another bit of irony, the Pioneers defeated GCT in the semi-finals that year, the oppostion Monday.

As mentioned, Cody shut down the Airedales, going the distance w/7 bagels. Anybody that has followed the boys, knows their chances are very good w/Commander Cody on the hill.

Leading the hit parade, Cody 1b, Arnie 1b & rbi, Cizz 2-1b's & rbi, Trent 2-1b's & Will 2-1b's, rbi.

Don't drop your guard & start thinking of another trip to Baum away from home(or Batesville West) until another "W" is placed in the left column Monday night.......Coach Hunt always has the Eagles prepared for the state tournament.

      Pioneers now 25-6!!!

Get some rest, be ready for Monday night & have a safe trip to beautiful downtown Camden.

      Hold the rope.
    • May 05, 2007 09:34:56 1st Round Victory - Carl
Great job, Pioneers! My family obligations will keep me away again today, but you know I'm predicting another great Pioneer Victory. The Team of 2002 would love a victory over Alma today! Good Luck, Pioneers. Make yourselves proud..
    • May 05, 2007 01:23:30 LEOPARDS LOSE THEIR SPOTS - HOZIER24
Pioneers come from behind in 1st round with exciting 5-4 thriller over Malverne.

Backed by the relief pitching of Cody & a fired up crowd, the boys fought back w/4 runs in their final two at bats.

Pooch got the boys on the board w/an oppo HR to cut the lead in half. After the Leopards grabbed a 4-1 lead the boys came back w/3 runs in the 5th. Cizz's SAC FLY, got one back & Fathead's 2-out, 2 rbi single tied the game. After Pooch walked, Nick Dailey(running for Pooch)advanced to 3rd on 2 wild pitches. Ross drove in what turned out to be the decisive run w/a BIG 2-OUT infield single.

Cody finished the Malverne 7th w/2k's.

      GREAT JOB w/the win.

      Big game@2:30pm w/Alma.

      Hold on to the rope!!!!

Did anybody see this morning's J'boro Sun? Nothing mentioned about the Pioneer "W". Interesting.....

Pioneers win their 23rd game with 3-1 victory over Jonesboro. Nice start & win by Trent, with relief help from Cizz & Cody.

It all got started by an RBI single by Hail Cesar-ski in the 1st. Pioneers score again in the 4th after Little Aaron, Fathead & Pooch single in successsion.

Final run is scored in the 5th after Jake Palese walks, Ross(pinch running) is bunted to second by Cody, Arnie then singles & comes around on an RBI ground out by Little Aaron.

Fine D being turned in by Pioneers, led by Captain Thornton's glove work....

Continue the trend as you head into Camden for the state tournament.

Fletch, thanks for another nice game in Batesville.

      Hold on to the rope.

Congratulations to the Pioneers & the coaching staff with the DH sweep over Beebe on Senior Day.

Nice job by Cody w/the 1 hitter & 7 bagels in the 2-0 opener. Great D by Little Aaron.

Nice job by Cizz picking up the win in the nightcap w/5 bagels. Timely hitting to make it a good short game in 5 innings, 10-0.

22-6.....Great season with a lot to go.

      Hold on to the rope.
    • Apr 20, 2007 13:52:32 #'s - HOZIER24
My bad, the only #'s that are important are"20"(wins)

Following the games Tuesday night(Greene sweep).I was happily excited for the DH sweep(theTEAM'S SUCCESS)& inadvertently had some wrong #'s.

All the blogs posted have been POSITIVE(Generally, following '"W's" w/no finger pointing)

Let's get ready for Beebe & the state tournament by worrying about the IMPORTANT #'s("W's")

      Hold on to the rope.

      Hozier24,

Your numbers are incorrect. Arnold has 2 homeruns, not 3. Cesarski has won 6 games, not 7. Weeks has 4 homeruns and Aycock has 6 wins. You were correct with Palese's 5th homerun.

Carl, it would appear that your insight & inspirational comments may have, perhaps, caused a chain(or rope) of reactions in firing up the Pioneers GREENE Sweep in Paragould yesterday....

Thanks for the updated stats & records.

Thanks again for everything you do for the Pioneers & the city of Batesville.

See ya for Senior day vs. Beebe.

      Hold on to the rope.
    • Apr 17, 2007 23:32:15 Greene SWEEP!! - HOZIER24
Pioneers pick up #19 & #20, more importantly TWO BIG CONFERENCE WINS!!!!

Cody picked up another win in game 1....1 run allowed, 5 k's, great job.

      Hit parade....Arnie w/2hits including his 3rd HR(2 run jack), Fathead w/2 hits including his 5th HR, Pooch 4 hits including 2b & 3 rbi's, Trent 2run jack, Will 2 hits, Ross rbi 2b. Good D @short by PH3.

Game 2 was Cizz-sational!!!Good to see Cesar on the hill to pick up his 7th "W"...8 k's, 2 hits & 1 run allowed. Leading the hit parade was HAIL Cesar w/the TIMELY grand salami(rbi 2b, 5rbi's total), Little Aaron w/3 2b's, Trent w/1b & 2b, Arnie 1b, Will 1b, Ross 1b.

Great way to go on the road & win TWO ball games as a TEAM.

2, maybe 3 BIG conference games left(broom@home vs. Beebe may not require another trip to beautiful downtown Blytheville)left to go before the state tournament.

It's been a great year, a few bumps along the way, but 18-6 is something to be proud of. The coaching staff & the players have made it a VERY successful season & YOU still have a LONG way to go....

Its the little things that win in baseball. Do your jobs on the little things, listen to your coaches, and you usually win in a tight ballgame. Remember to have fun and be loose. You can do it.
We all love to beat Wynne!!! Hold the rope!

Carl, I have heard that you have pretty much or maybe entirely had to run the Classic on your own, and you've done a great job - just like you do on this website. Get done with the Classic, get rested, and then I know we can't wait for the updated news and stats. Hold the rope yourself.

    • Apr 10, 2007 20:49:58 I am So Behind! - Carl
      Guys,

I apologize for getting behind on the website. It's tough to keep up and run the Classic. In the last week I have been present for 28 baseball games. I have been at the field every night for the last eight days with the exception of Sunday. I have worked every day since March 17th with the exception of last weekend which I of course spent at the ballpark. Not complaining it's a great place to be, but between work and baseball it doesn't leave much time for sleep, which is what I did most of the day on Sunday. Anyway, with any luck I will tie up the Winners Bracket in the small school tomorrow night. The coaches want to play it out tomorrow, which means 3 consecutive games on the babe Ruth field and another late night. So, as soon as I can I will catch the stats up and post some stories!

After falling behind 12-6, Pioneers show their character coming back to win 15-14. The 12 spot must have fired up the boys after jumping to a quick 6 run lead.

While the Pioneers were rained out in Springdale, the prospects looked grim here. So we'll start then and finish up on Saturday the 14th, the first available Saturday after the Large School Friday and Saturday.

      The boys brought their bats for the long trip.....3 runs in the 1st inning set the tone.....Cody 2 hits, Arnie 3b, Little Aaron 2hits w/2rbi, Cizz 2 hits w/2rbi 2b, Fathead 3run bomb, Pooch 3 hits w/2 2b & 3rbi, PH3 1B......

Wonderful job on the hill by Cody....gave up 2 hits & put up 7 bagels. Pooch with the BIG 2 run pop over the centerfield wall. Great job throwing out would be base stealers.

Game 2 was a great game to watch as a fan, but the outcome obviously was not what we anticipated. Ciz gave the team another good 6 frames & PH3 did a good job in relief....

Bruin season opened in Craighead County....Pioneers bring muskets & bats, spank Pulaski Academy Bruins 11-3.

HAIL CESARski picks up his 5th win. Trent started & pitched 3 innings, giving up 2 hits. Ciz put 3 bagels on the board, striking out 4. The rest was history as Cody came in for the 7th inning, slammed the door shut by striking out the side. Also, nice play from deep short to quell any type of rally by the Bruins.

The hits started a little slow, but ended with a blast. Arnie had 3 hits(2run HR), Fat head 3hits(2rbi), Little Aaron 2 hits(2b, rbi), HAIL CESARski (3bb's, 2runs, rbi), Pooch w/2rbi 3b(insurance runs), Trent 1b, Bear 1b, rbi.

Great week!! Great weekend tournament in NE Arkansas. Great TEAM effort, Great start to season @12-2. Great momentum heading into BIG conference DH with Nettleton.

      Hold onto the rope.
    • Mar 23, 2007 23:31:54 PH factor - HOZIER24
PH3 picks up "W", Pioneers move to 11-2. Soph pitches 7 strong innings with 12 K'S, 1 BB, scatters 4 hits & outduels the young Rivercrest pitcher.

Timely hitting provided by Pioneers was enough. LIttle Aaron started it off with a single, followed by Hail Cesar's rbi double, then by Pooch's rbi single. Pooch again came through with an rbi triple. Little Bear added the last insurance run with infield rbi single.

      Bring your bats tomorrow...

      Hold onto the rope.....
    • Mar 23, 2007 07:33:43 correction - HOZIER24
The Wynne-Rivercrest score was incorrect per last night's post. Wynne won 4-3, not 5-4. My apologies.

Be careful going to Paragould. Don't catch a ride with Tony LaRussa.......
    • Mar 22, 2007 23:01:40 TATERS & BAGELS - HOZIER24
Pioneers win 10-2, up record to 10-2.....3run bomb by Fathead, followed immediately by Pooch's solo shot in the 1st inning. Cody then launched his 3rd moonshot of the season...Pioneers rap out the hits...Cody HR, Arnie 1b, Little Aaron rbi 2b, Fathead 3 hits, Pooch HR, Trent 1b, 2b, rbi, PH3 2 1B'S, Ross 1b, 2rbi's.

      Fathead with 7 innings, 8 k's, no bb's & "W"....

Go get Rivercrest tomorrow & hand them another loss by the 5a east(They got beat by Wynne 5-4 & will probably be hungry)

      Hold the rope......
    • Mar 21, 2007 00:18:48 North Pulaski.....WELCOME TO THE 5A EAST.......... - HOZIER24
Nice DH broom activity.....The hits were plenty & so were the runs...23 runs in the 1st game & 14 in the nightcap.

Another nice super effort on the hill for Cody(1H, 10 K's) Ciz did it again, picking up the "W". Trent did another fine job closing out both games.

The hits came from top to bottom in both games. Great job, great TEAM EFFORT. Just a quick summaryof both games: Cody 5-7, HR, 7rbI; Arnie 2-6 2, 3rbi; Littke Aaron 5-8 2b, 7rbi; Ciz,4-7, 2b HR, 3rbi; Fat Head 2-6, 2rbi; Trent 2-5; Bear 2-4, 2rbi; Kyle 3-8 2b, rbi; Ross 3-5 3b, rbi; PH3, HR, Golden 2b......For more info check out Carl's Official Scorecard.

Great Job, 9-2(3-1). Have a great weekend in the XI Clasic.

    • Mar 19, 2007 10:30:55 INFO - HOZIER24
      Carl,

Thanks for the info on the maps....

Re:Ciz.... it appears to me that he mixes speed & location real well...Nothing overpowering, just does a great job keeping the opposing batters off balance...He has done an outstanding job to this point & will be a key in the team's success. He is a typical crafty southpaw. He deserved a better fate against Paragould.

The boys just need to get after it tomorrow by welcoming North Pulaski into the conference....

    • Mar 17, 2007 16:58:42 New Maps Format - Carl
      Guys,

Take a look at the new Maps format I've done. If you look at the links for Searcy, Fayetteville, or North Pulaski, you can see the changes. These maps can be zoomed, and panned. They draw their data directly from the Google map database, not from a static image like the ones I have done in the past. The good thing about that is when google updates their map data, my maps will update also. As time allows I will change my existing maps to the new format. Another cool feature is that you can click on the "Hybrid" button and get the satellite image also.
    • Mar 16, 2007 19:05:30 Cesarski - Carl
      Guys,

What kind of magic is the big C putting on those balls? From the black hole of Calcutta scorer's box I can't tell. It must be tough for the batters too because they miss a lot more than they hit.
    • Mar 16, 2007 15:54:41 dead horse - %d comments
to beat a dead horse for philosophical discussion:

9 hits usually wins. 2004 team averaged 10.7 hits a game. 2005 team averaged 9.3. it wasn't necessarily poor hitting overall, untimely hitting combined with baserunning mistakes(not necessarily errors) in other words----focus shouldn't be on hitting necessarily---but on perfect baserunning----lot less chance with doing known high percentage baserunning techniques rather than where the ball lands. great start nonetheless, hold the rope
      • Mar 16, 2007 17:32:45 What else can you do with a dead horse? - Carl
Would you say that 9 hits spread relatively equally over 7 innings usually wins? Probably not. That's one of the reason's you group you better batters together, so that their combination will result in runs. In the Newport game in 2004 we combined for 10 hits with 3 walks but scored only 1 run. We left 11 on. Sometimes things just don't work out. I agree with your comment on perfect baserunning, and would add perfect fielding. Errors or poor judgement on the bases can be the difference. And maybe we aren't giving the Ram Pitcher, Garmrath, his due. While he didn't have overpowering strikeout numbers, he did seem to have something going for him. The worst thing about being in my box is that I can't see how the balls come across the plate.

Thanks for the comments, that's what this space is for. A wise man once told me he never learned anything from people who agreed with him. I think that there can be a lot of truth in that statement, differing views on issues stimulate discussion, sharing of ideas and learning.

          Carl,

wonderful insight, wonderful site, wonderful sport, wonderful being a batesville fan,
          keep up the good work,
you help the team a lot
    • Mar 16, 2007 11:52:40 Re: # of hits - twigs
I also have the Pioneers with eight hits from my score book, with no hits in the first . The second inning we got 3 hits in a row, then only one each inning after that.
    • Mar 16, 2007 09:00:32 baserunning - %d comments
      Carl,

again, thank you for your contibution to pioneer baseball. you are right, no big deal this early,
however, i think you cannot just look at outs as an indicator of poor base running. you also have to look at missed oppurtunities of advancement or not scoring.
Tagging up, stealing, etc. are critical when timing of hits is unlucky or in a game where line drives go into the other teams' gloves. as you always say, baseball is such a great sport because of the details in combination with timing/teamwork. go pioneers, bounce back big!
    • Mar 15, 2007 19:09:57 Batting Stats - Carl
Going back and looking at my stats I have the team at a batting average of .267 with 8 hits. Increase it to 9 and you get to .300. in either case, there were only 2 for extra bases. Contrast that with the .417 and 4 extra base hits in the first game with only 1 additional hit. That is why I would say that the batting in the second game could have been better. I have looked again and can't say that I agree with poor baserunning. We had 2 outs on the bases and 19 outs at the plate or at first. Anyway, no big deal. Pioneers are winners, always have been always will be. Lots of ball to play and lots of experience to be gained before it really gets down to the wire at the State Tournament.
    • Mar 15, 2007 15:53:33 Re: Welcome - %d comments
Pioneers did have nine hits. One of the problems was, except for one inning where there were three hits in a row, we could only muster one hit per inning and therefore could not move the baserunner. Baserunning was another problem just as the paper stated.
    • Mar 15, 2007 14:44:18 Re: Welcome - %d comments
      carl,
the paper said 9 hits in the second game. 9 hits doesn't sound like poor hitting. poor base running is what paper said was problem. was 9 hits correct?
      • Mar 15, 2007 18:45:58 Hitting, Running, etc. - Carl
"poor" hitting was a poor choice of wording, I was a little tired when I wrote that. I think a more accurate description would be that we could not muster "timely" hits. With runners on we were not able to advance and score them. Is eight or nine hits a lot? Grouped together as in the first game it is great, spread over seven innings when you aren't seeing walks or HP's or finding some other avenue to reach base it really isn't. I think my biggest disappointment was having to put a loss down for Steven after the game he had pitched. Was 9 hits correct? I have 8 in my book, I assume where I scored an error Paul scored a hit. I've learned a lot in the last few years about scoring, and one of the biggest things is your point of view. I score them how I see them, as does everyone else. Who is right is anyone's guess.
    • Mar 14, 2007 20:54:19 Split with Paragould - Carl
The Pioneers split last night with the Paragould Rams. Outstanding Pitching by Aycock and Cesarski held the Rams to 4 runs on the nights. Poor hitting in the second game left the Pioneers short of the sweep. Carl will not be at all the games for a while since he is now working extended hours (7 days a week, 10 hours a day) however I will keep the website up and be at all of the home and hopefully all of the conference games. We'll only be working long hours until the end of April. sigh....

Great games on Friday. Cizz did his job well and was supported by the whole team. The Pioneers are leaving big footprints for JV to fill. Way to step up JV...good wins last week.

    • Mar 11, 2007 14:59:06 HOMErun OPENER - HOZIER24
Cizz gets another "W", rips ball to help his own cause(3 hits), Little Aaron provides more senior leadership with his hitting feats. Nice to see everyone join the hit parade. The split with two good teams this week was a positive, after the way it ended in Searcy with the walmart walkoff.

Big week coming with conference play Tuesday.

      5-1.....Hold the rope.
    • Mar 11, 2007 14:59:04 THEFT BY DECEPTION! - Hozier24
Walmart walkoff....Outstanding pitching effort by Cody. Lil Aaron w/2hits, Fathead w/2rbi\'s(double & plunked in head w/bases juiced)Ross w/big double to start 6th inning comeback. Arnie w/clutch rbi single to tie game in 7th. Boys got in hole, showed great character in comeback effort, only to have it end suddenly.
